I met Mr. Blackburn in 1990 as a student at Clark College that had the opportunity to spend a week of adventures learning about the Great Basin Desert. Honestly, it was just luck that I was selected on the trip, and it turned out to be a class of a lifetime. He led us to places that most people don't get to go. I got to see nature close-up and personal with the best guide. Every time I drove to Boise to see my own daughter in college at BSU and drove through Eastern Oregon, I tell my husband of this amazing class trip. When people ask, name you favorite instructor... I say without a doubt “Mr. Blackburn at Clark College”. Now much older and many, many years of college classes later I still say the same thing. Thank you, Mr. Blackburn, for sharing your passion and life experiences. The world was a better place with you in it, you will be missed. Jenny Nelson (Lewis)

Del Blackburn was our professor at Clark College, '1970-'1972. He started us on our life long commitment to be good environmental stewards of MotherEarth and to help the AnimalKingdom avoid another Extinction. We worked together with Del on the first EarthDay, '1970. Our night 'stranded' on Mt St.Helen's during his OutDoor Survival class, prepared us for the Real World! We will forever be indebted with the scientific knowledge that he passed on to us! God'sPeace, professor Blackburn. Kenny/Danny Cochran

I remember Del with fondest memories from my college days in the late 1970's. What a superb instructor! I had him for Northwest Flowering Plants, Zoology, field studies at Malheur and Coos Bay, and a special project studying the eutrophication of a lake in the Columbia River Gorge.
The impact of knowing him changed the trajectory of my life. While in his classes, I walked away from pursuing a career in medicine and developed a passion for teaching science to my classmates. I pursued a secondary ed certificate and have worked as a science teacher for 30+ years.
He will be missed!

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Del Blackburn. I am a native of Wallace, but lived in Vancouver, WA for 16 years. During that time I attended Clark College and got my associates degree. After graduating I continued to take classes at the college including biology which was taught by Del. He was a wonderful teacher and I learned a lot from him. He had mentioned that his wife's family lived in the area of Heyburn Park and that he would retire there. I'm glad he had the opportunity to do so. I don't remember all of my instructors over the years, but I do remember Mr. Blackburn. RIP Mr. Blackburn.
