I first met Merwin when I was a patient at NIARC, the North Idaho Addition Recovery Center, where he worked as a chemical dependency technician. He primarily worked the graveyard shift. I couldn't sleep most nights and would find myself wandering into the office where we would spend a few hours talking about Jesus. That was his favorite thing to do - talk about Jesus. You could see joy, love, and a fierce fire in his eyes when he would talk about his Lord and Savior. I had never met anyone with that kind of passion about Jesus.
Over the years we developed a friendship with Jesus always at the heart. He and his wife and Scooter, would invite me to their home where we would spend the evening breaking bread, watching movies, and talking about Jesus. He never missed an opportunity to do that if he could.
We lost contact after they moved to Post Falls and I started school. I would read some of his Facebook posts and watch some of his videos, all of which were about Jesus. I never met a man more on fire for Jesus. He lived and died with Him in His heart. I know Merwin is now with his Lord and Savior, hearing the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant." The world may be a darker place without Merwin in it, but he left a bright and shining legacy behind, and now he is basking in the presence of his beloved Jesus.

It doesn't get anymore special than Merwin and Scooter. They've been constant good friends over the years. They are some of the most rare people you'll ever meet because they're always on the cutting edge of doing God's work. They have been faithful servants and have blessed so many lives. May Merwin's memory always be a blessing.

Merwin was a mountain of a man. I thought of him as carved from granite...strong, sharp, angular and physically intense with a penetrating gaze. But though he possessed a unique sense of humor, I soon discovered Merwin to be completely serious about God. I remember watching him when a friend quoted the book of 2 Timothy at a gathering of friends years ago. Glancing around the room, I saw that he had tears quietly streaming down his face. I knew then that this man was much "deeper and wider" than I could have imagined. And in this last year, I witnessed Merwin the Mountain morph into Merwin the Merciful. His face became soft and yielded. His eyes were awash with tenderness. His expression became that of a wide-eyed child full of trust and wonder. I could barely recognize the man I had once known, because that severe countenance had become so full of love...even in those darkest of days. Isn't that the miracle of one whose heart belongs to God? In this world, especially in these last years, Merwin knew incredible tribulation, frustration and pain. But when you looked at the face of this dying man, you knew you were gazing at the expression of a true Overcomer. And his magnificent utterance of that one sentence: "YOU CAN TRUST HIM"...will remain with me forever. A man like Merwin cannot die, because faith, hope and love carved his name in Eternity. I am so proud of the way Merwin lived, but I am especially proud of the way he died. May we all depart from this earth one day with the same degree of honor, courage and willingness that our brother so beautifully displayed. We'll see you again soon and very soon, Merwin Severtson. You will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved your magnificent self.
