Obituary of Daniel Scott Blattner

Daniel Scott Blattner, age 59 of Coeur D’Alene, ID died suddenly of a heart attack on May 15, 2023. Scott, as he was known by family and friends, was born in Nampa, ID on April 22, 1964, to Jerry D Blattner and Marilyn Kay Blattner. Scott and his sister Julie were raised in beautiful McCall, ID. Growing up he attended McCall Donnelly Public Schools where he rarely missed a day of school, was excellent at math but an average student overall. Early records indicate that Scott did satisfactory work in all studies but was prone to “waste time, whisper too much and inclined to mischief”! Thankfully, Scott was athletic and from a very young age an exceptionally dedicated skier. Starting at about age 6 with the renowned ski club the Mighty Mites, he was able to participate in ski camps all over the Northwest. Placing and winning many competitions. Scott received his varsity letter in skiing in the ’79-’80 season and graduated high school in 1982. An avid outdoorsman, growing up near Payette Lake and Payette National Forest, Scott also enjoyed cross country skiing, water skiing, boating, fishing, trapping, hunting and surprisingly skateboarding. He played hard but also worked (sort of) hard. He was part of a summer crew at the local lumber mill, he worked part time during the school year as a busser at the popular restaurant The Mill, and seasonally helped at his mother’s local business McCall Floral, although his flower delivery skills were questionable. After graduating and before he could get himself into too much trouble, Scott learned the trade of concrete work from a local businessman. He took this new skill set to work in various towns throughout ID, MT, OR and AZ where he definitely worked hard. He eventually settled in Coeur D’Alene, ID pouring foundations all over Kootenai Co. More importantly, the area was the ideal location for him to enjoy all his hobbies. Scott loved hunting for elk and deer, fly fishing, ice fishing and steelhead fishing with good friends and sometimes work buddies Tom, Chris and Jason. However, his favorite activity for many years was duck hunting and that was reserved for his best friend and constant companion, his Black Lab, Annie. The one and only super dog could never be replaced even though his true love and life partner tried with pets of her own. Scott met the angelic Dilia online in 2006. It is still a mystery just how that connection was made… The love birds (or nuts) dated long distance between NM and ID before she was fortunate enough to move to Coeur D’Alene in 2010 to live with Scott in the smallest house on 3rd street. In that chaotic space where Scott continued to base his business for “Flatwork Concrete Services”, Scott also made room for fly tying, gardening, canning, smoking and barbequing meats. He often surprised Dilia with delicious dinners and homemade ice cream! Seasonally, he rooted for his favorite teams the Seattle Seahawks AND the Green Bay Packers. He also made time, though he never thought it was enough time, to help his mom maintain the lake house property in MT. It was his favorite place in the world. Together, Scott and Dilia enjoyed listening to all genres of music, which might hold some clue to the mystery… They always had the radio on and especially enjoyed going to concerts which were even more fun to attend when they won free concert tickets. They also (ridiculously) enjoyed taking long road trips with no reservations made. Just a few weeks before his passing, Scott’s most recent adventure took him to experience Badlands National Park, the Mt. Rushmore Monument, the Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, Devil’s Tower and parts of Yellowstone National Park. Scott’s ever supporting and surviving family members include: his life partner, Dilia Rael; mother, Marilyn Blattner; sister, Julie (Dan) Roop; niece, Cassidy (Justin) Nelson and their two children, Owen and Alyson. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who were already determined to have a “mini” Douthit Family Reunion this summer. As all the details will surely come together, it feels appropriate for Scott’s Life to be Celebrated on Saturday, July 15, 2023, in Dayton, MT. Friends will be treated like family and are welcome to attend.
