Donna
I am so sorry to hear of Johns passing. We had such good times in Germany, so many years ago.

Donna, I just learned of Johns passing. I have looked for years on the Internet for you two. Mary passed in 2002. Our son Mark lives in San Diego and our daughter who was born after we left Germany lives near me in Virginia.

When I became the Kootenai County Veteran Service Officer in 2004; I met John Dunlap and recognized him as a man that commanded respect. I enjoyed his home-cookin at the Post 143. And was always in amazement at his tireless service to our community. He is one of the reasons I work hard in my job for the veteran population of Kootenai County. He is the best example I know of community service. I wish I could have spent more time with him at the Post. John was set in his ways; and at times it may have rubbed folks the wrong way...but I can say with confidence that he was always OTHER focused. It is evident by his Celebration of life this afternoon at the Post. It was great to see the turn-out for the family. He will be missed.

Our hearts are heavy in learning about John going to be with our Lord. Having know John for over 30 years has been a very special and rewarding experience. He quickly became a "go to" person to get things done, especially for Veterans and Homeless. He also became an Icon of our community and region. John will be remembered as a Legend by many folks, young and old. he was especially proud of the Legion Explorer Scout group he helped form. He had the love of his family, friends and pretty much everyone who knew and worked with him. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

The simple, common man has lost a hero. The multitude of small acts and gestures have added up to some great accomplishments in the well-lived life of John Dunlap. If you added up all the things he taught me about home maintenance when he was at Helmer's, you would be surprised. The lessons he taught us all about honor, loyalty, and patriotism surprise no one. This one time we should not "close ranks", but leave a space to remind us of John. With his family and many, many friends I share the loss of a fine man and salute him one last time.
