Hi A. Betty and family, Just wanted to send my sincere sympathy. Thank you so much for letting us know about the passing of U. Ross. I wish so much that Washington was closer to us so that we could have come to give you a big hug in person. Please know that we love you and hope you are able to feel the Savior's love and peace at this time. Gail Kennington

Ross was the best neighbor a person could have. He was devoted to his family, his church and even to the people living next door to him. A person would have to look far and wide for a better neighbor. Not only a neighbor, but a helper, a friend, a man who could "Fix" anything.
I missed Ross when he moved from next door and I know his family and other friends will miss him immensely in his passing. I have tears in my eyes as I write this and my wife refers to him as an angel. Fortunately Ross will be an angel for others as he has been for us.
Thank you Ross for all your goodness.

Would that every young boy could have a big brother who would exemplify integrity and honor as admirably as Ross did for me.

It was a fun thing to go around on our hands and feet like the other animals. So dad got us a wheelbarrow to "teach us to walk on our hind feet". Ross became so efficient at this
method of travel that he could beat me while I was running on two feet.

Every time I have visited Uncle Ross, he has said, "come here" and has proceeded to show me some beautiful thing outside, whether it is a deer or a fruit coming on. He also loved to teach my sons things in his shop.

As a young nephew of Ross, I always looked forward to visits with him and his family, though distances between our families made this a rare event. My father (Stanley) described to me many times Ross' genius in inventing things, telling me stories of how the sandstone rock cutter was designed and built under Ross' direction. I considered myself a budding inventor from early childhood, and begged to know as much as possible about Uncle Ross. Finally we visited him in Spokane, and he offered to show me and my father the machine shop where he worked. He described the lathes and other machines, describing how the tolerances and capacities varied on each one. I was in heaven and Ross became my hero and role model! That experience influenced the rest of my life as I have pursued engineering and other technical fields. In retrospect, I know it was his kindness and love, as well as his genius, that so endeared him to me.

I loved seeing Ross's dedication in coming to the Temple at least once a day for as long as he could. He was truly loved by all of us at the Temple. It always made me so happy to see him walking up the steps at the temple or at church or where ever he would be. Truly a wonderful man and he will be so missed. Jan Schlerf

From the first moment I met Papa, he welcomed me into the family with opened arms. Having married his last son, he was very happy to know that all of his children had eternal companions. He told me that marriage can be very wonderful and a great blessing as long as I served my husband and allowed him to serve me and together we serve the Lord. He shared with me the joy of doing extraction work and we had great phone calls and emails about how it was going. I remember when Ben and I came to visit him, a month before his passing, we were sitting alone in the living room and the question about the scriptures had come up. I had the honor and the privilege to read from the scriptures outloud to him as he sat in his chair with a calmness and peace. It was fun to go to the Temple with him as well. I love his bright spirit, his compassion and his love of the Lord's work. I look forward to seeing him again.

As I am actually a member of the family, I want to leave a couple of memories here to show what a great father my papa was. The first time I ever went fishing was in the middle of winter. I'd never tried it before, and was a little nervous, but we found an already used hole, cleared it out, and I dropped my hook in the water. I'm not sure how long I waited, but, after a while, there was a tug on the line, and I set the hook and started reeling it in. It was a beautiful rainbow trout, but there was a problem. Papa spotted it immediately. The fish had swallowed the hook and spit out the bait. The only thing to do was have Papa clean the fish, right there on the ice, to retrieve the hook. I don't remember much of how it tasted, but that memory stays with me, not for the excitement of catching my first fish but for the unusual way the hook was retrieved, and the fact that Papa was there to do it. Whenever a problem came up, he was the first on the scene to use his problem solving skills to solve it.
