Sad to hear about Jim. Knew him from the Air Force in Colorado Springs. He was always so full of life. Was friends with him & Paul Hewitt & Jim even took us on a flight one time out of the Air Force Aero Club at Peterson Field. I remember the drive he & I made to Pinehurst one time in my VW bug. What a time. Remember hitting a pheasant in the middle of my windshield going thru Montana. Always enjoyed visiting his family in Pinehurst. God"s speed Jim. R.I.P.

I was just scrolling through some names of old classmates and saw this news of Jim's passing. My sympathies to each of you. Time does heal, but we still feel the loss.
Jim and I were in Cub Scouts together, and hung out quite a bit in 3rd grade when I first moved to Pinehurst. He was a nice guy then, and it sounds like he lived that out throughout his life. He was a memorable character.
Blessings and Peace,
Mark Grorud

Although I hadn't seen Jim in many years I remember his generosity and kindness when we were in Boy Scouts together in Troop 326 in Pinehurst. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. May God bless your family.

Dear Ms Bening,
I am very sorry to hear that Jim passed away. Jim was my first flight instructor at Felts Field Aviation and then when Steve Rezin took over, became my mentor and friend. What he taught me as a pilot was my foundation for a professional pilot career. I will be forever grateful to him for imparting his knowledge and professionalism to me. He was an incredibly talented aviator and friend. I will miss him.
Prayers and love,
Sheri Marshall

Many of us remember Jim as chief pilot for Felts Field Aviation back in the days. He worked with us in the Forest Service flying air patrols, fire reconnaissance, and personnel transport. We talked about flying lead planes for the Forest Service but he needed to get 90 days experience as a primary firefighter before he could apply. One day he called Bernie Lionberger (the forest aviation officer at that time) and me about an FAA job and accepted a position with them. Felts Field Aviation was never the same after Jim left.
If I remember right, Jim's grandfather was a district ranger for the Forest Service (Noxon or Bull River or ?) and Bening Mountain on the Sandpoint Ranger District was named after him. It became misspelled on later maps and it shows as Benning Mountain.
What I remember about Jim the most was his first concern was for the pilots that worked for him.
Pax et bonum, my friend, pax tecum.

We met Jim in the early 90s when we ran the airport in Sandpoint. Jim and I went to a Star Trek convention in Spokane together. One of the best times I've ever had. Jim was a great guy and I was very sorry to read of his passing. My thoughts are with all of his family.

Remembering Jim sharing his knot-knowledge with me on a Lower Salmon River trip a few years ago....among many other lessons. He was so happy at the Honda Oar with 5 rafts lashed together going down the Snake. He made life memorable for us all!

Jim was among my earliest playmates in that he lived just down the street from my home in Pinehurst. He was a very kind thoughtful person and I will always have fond memories of childhood play in a very small community. I also graduated from High School with him, just one more special connection.
