Ever since we met Charles and his family at our wedding they have become like close relatives to us. When our son Tonio was born Charles automatically became fond of him. Charles sent a special knife for Tonio's first birthday. When we were living in Hawaii and Tonio got sick (lost all his acquired skills including speech and was diagnosed with autism) Charles was one of the first people to offer help. He opened his home (his own bedroom nonetheless) and we were able to take Tonio to treatment in Spokane everyday for 3 weeks. Whenever he sees us his first question was, "How is the little boy doing?" Our son is doing very well now and Charles' kindness was instrumental in Tonio's healing. We are forever grateful. There was always enough room in Charles' home, in his heart and in his sharp memory. Tonio was so excited every time we go visit his Uncle Charles. We look forward to seeing him again on that special day. - Ken and Tey

Charlie had a really nice place in Western Montana that was lost in a fire several years ago. When Charlie moved into that place he did tremendous amounts of wall building and landscaping including building some beautiful ponds that he stocked with hybrid rainbow and cutthroat trout. He fed these fish with dry dog food and they quickly grew to large size. Over the years, my Dad and I spent many hours with Charlie watching and feeding those fish - they were like his pets. When my daughter Rachael was small and we visited from Alabama and later California she always loved to watch the fish and really enjoyed feeding them. Charlie said that he wanted her to catch her first fish in his pond - this was a very big deal because no one fished in his ponds. When she was 5 and a half and we were coming up for a visit Charlie and my Dad planned her little fishing expedition. She managed to catch and release several 17 to 19 inch fish out of the lower pond and was she excited! Those fish jumped and fought and were just beautiful. Charlie and my Dad were so excited they were beside themselves. Charlie was hooting and hollering and helping her with the net and the fish and he was beaming from ear to ear with his blue eyes just twinkling. Charlie helped create a beautiful memory shared between all 4 of us and is one that Rachael and I cherish. Charlie was close family to us - really much closer to me than any other male figure other than my Father who was one of his closest friends. Charlie is with my Dad now and they are enjoying telling fishing and hunting stories again and god willing experiencing new ones and waiting for the rest of us to join them.

One day last year my daughter Natalie & I traveled from Montana to Coeur d'Alene to visit the Field family. As we were pulling up to the house we see Charles come out of the house on his wheelchair & fly down the ramp. It scared me a little because he was driving the wheelchair like a race car,fearless. I was sure that he was going to do a face plant when he reached the bottom. It was like watching something out of the movies. Natalie & I were laughing so hard by this time because Charles drove by us headed down the street in only his boxers. Upon his return he saw we were standing there watching him & he was grining from ear to ear. When we had pulled in to the drive Rose had told him that "Fara is here". Charles thought she said "FIRE is here" so that is why he came rushing out of the house. Charles never failed to make me laugh or put a smile on my face. He never ran out of awesome stories to tell. I am going to really miss him. I love you Rose & Robert! We are so blessed to have you as family! I love & miss you already Charles!
