Our community is indebted to Jack Sanders for the fine book he recently edited, War on All Fronts, for the Umatilla County Historical Society. It is masterful and will stand as a tribute to his scholarly work.

Susan,
I was very saddened to hear of Jack's death. I shall surely miss the opportunity to be with and learn from him.
One of the great joys of my genealogy hobby was the coincidence of my learning of Jack's interest in my great uncle, Samuel Rothchild. It was a privilege to have you and Jack visit Kentucky and see all the Rothchild homesteads.
Jack and I also shared an interest in fly fishing and spoke of getting together on an non-history basis. I'm sorry that never happened and will think of him with pleasure when I'm in the water.
Please know you and Jack's family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Fred

When I think of Uncle Jack, I do not think of specific memories. Instead, it is his aura that is always present. His laughter; his inquisitiveness; that sly look on his face when he was pushing you to question your thoughts and assumptions and knew you were close to discovering something previously unknown to you. I think of (and feel) dedication and committment and the envelope of love which he brought to those in his life.
As I type this, there are tears in my eyes but also a warm smile on my face, full of love and fondness. And that is how Uncle Jack will live on inside of me.

Dear Susan, what a shock, we are so sorry to hear of the sudden and accidental death of such a fine man, who was so kind and considerate of the two of us, grandsons of Reuben Alexander, who played a minor part in the Sam Rothchild history and biography by Jack. It was an inspiration to us, and offered lots of interest to our German cousins who were lucky enough to have lunch with Jack and to visit the mausoleum with him a few months ago. He wow'd them his deep history of Pendleton and the Jewish settlers who traveled west in the mid 1850's, and, partly moved by Jack's keen interest, I am going to Germany this week to revisit roots there with my cousin Uli. We wish you well and pray for Jack and your well being, while knowing all the time that you will be able to lean on memories of many years with a remarkably good human being.
sincerely, Steve Terjeson, Hermiston, raised on North Main St, and Dodd Fischer, his cousin.

Dear Susan: Tim and I were so shocked when Sheila Seitz forwarded the announcement of Jack's death from the Register Guard. Please accept our deepest sympathies on the loss of the love of your life. I feel so bad being so far away that I cannot offer any real material help to you. I think I know how deeply you and Jack loved each other, and I take comfort in knowing how many years of happy memories you have. If after some time passes and you feel the need to get away, please know you are always welcome here in Sonoma. Much love, Paula and Tim Burkhart

I met Jack Sanders many years ago through his wife Susan, who was a graduate student in History at the University of Oregon at the same time I was. I never had the sense to take one of his courses, though my brother took several and still remembers them with great admiration. Jack was the archetypal academic: scholarly, rigorous, focused and thorough, with a wide range of interests beyond those of his particular specialty. He also had a wonderful and very dry sense of humor. It's been years since I've seen him, but I remember him fondly and will miss him greatly.

Thinking of Jack, there are just an awful lot of good memories. He always had a positive and cheerful way about him. He cared for his extended family and the next generation. Collin- he always wanted the best for you; you have a good example. He was certainly good to sister Sue, and as someone else said, he was a true gentleman.

I knew Jack in my job as a librarian at the University of Oregon. For many years, I was the library liaison to the Religious Studies department, and Jack was my contact within the department. Jack was responsible for suggesting many titles to be added to the UO Library collection in religious studies. He was thoughtful in his suggestions, always realizing the limitations of the library's budget but determined to create a library resource that students and professors would make use of. He was also fun to work with, with a great sense of humor. I enjoyed working with him and admired his scholarship.

Professor Sanders was one of my best teachers. I took all three of Professor Sanders' Bible & Civilization courses and graduated from the UO in Religious Studies in 1977. He introduced me to the historical-critical study of religion through his exemplary teaching. He insisted on demanding scholarly standards. He also introduced me to the work of Robert Funk and John Dominic Crossans, two towering figures in the scholarly study of Christian sacred texts. I am also grateful for the the civic work Professor Sanders did with my dad, Charles O. Porter, the lead attorney in "the cross case" in Eugene, Oregon. As a citizen in a religiously plural society (and world), I am grateful that Professor Sanders testified that the 51-foot cement cross two businessmen erected on Skinner Butte in 1964 without consulting the City Council was indeed a religious symbol, and not a secular war memorial, as some claimed. In 1997, after more than 30 years on Skinner Butte, a City Park, the cross finally came down in part due to the civic participation of Dr. Sanders and many others. That Professor Sanders exercised civic courage says a lot about the sort of man he was, a man of character. His example as a first-rate scholar and engaged citizen is remembered with much warmth and gratitude.

I miss you, Dad.
Thank you for being there.
Thank you for always being there.
Thank you for being there when I was a pain in the ass, thank you for being there when I was lonely, thank you for being there when I was lost.
You've always been my rock. You have always been what I have aspired to. You have been the Symbol in my life that I have always aspired to.
You were my mom, you were my dad, you were my friend.
I'm sorry, Dad, that I could not rescue you from the final day of pain you suffered before you passed. I would have moved the world a inch if I thought it would help. That is a pipe dream and I am faced with the reality of our sad existence.
I know you understand it, and I'm glad you have been in my life for so long. And you will not be forgotten. You will always be with me as you always have.
