Obituary of Wayne George Smith
Wayne George Smith September 4, 1925 ~ July 23, 2018, unexpectedly passed away at home peacefully in his sleep. Born in Spokane, WA. Son of George W. Smith and Lucile (Cameron) Smith.
Pre-deceased by his wife Janice, son Bruce, sisters Barbara and Margie, and brother Robert (WWII). Survived by daughter Jackie (Nova Scotia), son Bob (Spokane), and step-daughters Debi (Craig) Stephens (Seattle), Lynda (Colby) Ingram (Omak), Lisa (Kirk) Slenes (Phoenix, AZ), and Barbara Ann (Spokane).
Wayne joined the U.S. Navy during WWII. He initially served on the USS Henley which was sunk in battle by a Japanese submarine in the Pacific Ocean on October 31, 1943. He finished his Navy posting on the USS Preston which he called his “lucky ship”.
After the war, Wayne started working in the home heating business. He later started his own company Smith Heating, which is now owned and managed by his son Bob. Represented working there are 3 more generations. (Bob, grandson, Eric and great grandson, Jorgen)
Wayne was a very competitive person. Initially as a bowler and later as a golfer. He won many golf tournaments, some with his wife, Jan. At his 90th birthday party he shot a 90. Wayne and Jan were also well known for their generous hospitality.
May Dad join his wife Jan in peaceful eternity. He will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 11:30 AM at Bell Tower Funeral Home 3398 E. Jenalan Ave. Post Falls, ID.
