Obituary of Gismonda Battersby
On Monday, February 18, 2019, Gismonda (Mundy) Battersby, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother went home to be with the lord.
Mundy, as she was more commonly known, was born October 1, 1923, in Heerlen, Holland. She married her first husband, Gunther Katterbach, on January 25, 1947, in Herzogenrath, Germany. Before leaving Germany they had two daughters, Karin and Martha. In 1956, Mundy, Gunther, and their children immigrated to Ontario, Canada. There they had their 3rd child, Gerda. In 1963, Mundy and the family then immigrated to the United States. They settled in Palm Springs, California, where she and her husband started their own upholstering and drapery business. She became a widow after Gunther’s battle with cancer in December of 1966. She worked briefly at a hospital and then for Continental Telephone Company in Palm Springs where she met and married her second husband, William Batterbsy in 1968. In 1970, the family settled in Wrightwood, California. Mundy decided to go to school to acquire her cosmetology license and then owned a local salon for a few years while living in Wrightwood.
Mundy lead a very active and interesting life and had many talents. She loved taking walks, line dancing, tap dancing, reading, and traveling. She was a passionate and wonderful cook. She loved to share and pass on her German recipes to her children and grandchildren. She had a passion for country music as well as the classics. Most of all she loved to spend time with her family. Children and grandchildren were mesmerized as Mundy told stories of when she was a child growing up in Germany.
Mundy was preceded in death by her husbands, Gunther Katterbach in 1966, William Battersby in 2002, and her daughter Martha in 1998. She is survived by her sister Inge Annuss of Germany, her daughters, Gerda Belknap and her husband Bart of Idaho and Karin Tracy and her husband Jim of Nevada as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great, great grandchild.
Mundy will be missed terribly. The family takes comfort in knowing she is surrounded by family and is with God. Donations can be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815.
