I'm so thankful to have had Clayton as a friend, teacher, and mentor. After meeting him as my Sunday school teacher he has always been a positive influence in my life. Whether it was skateboarding, painting houses, or just being a friend he always had the biggest smile and the warmest heart that he shared with anyone and everyone around him.

Phil was an amazing man. He was a teacher for me in church. He always knew how to reach out to those in my class and make it a wonderful time. He was the one who taught me how to drive a stick shift car. He was honestly like a second dad for me while he was around.

I unfortunately only met him once and that was about a month ago. He seemed like a great guy. We were sitting in church and his smile, for me at least, brightened up the room. He added great stuff to our discussion that made me really think about things and I appreciate it. I'm sorry to see he is gone now. Thank you for the time I got to meet you and brightening up my day!

God Bless you Phil. I had the privilege of playing baseball with Phil at Cheney High. I was also fortunate to work with him painting houses for Coach Strampe one summer. Phil and I had the honor of coaching a Legion team that summer. I treasure the time that was spent with him. Such an incredible young man, he made me a better person just being around him. I am still coaching High school baseball and was just sharing a story about Phil last week with my players. Phil had a huge impact on all the lives he came in contact. Thank you Phil for all you have given.

It had been years since I heard from or seen Phillip when he called me up last summer (2018) while working in Lewiston, ID. When we met up it was smiles and hugs all around. His personality and smile were infectious. My girls instantly liked him and, of course, he reciprocated with nick names and silly jokes. I am so grateful that we got to share some time with him and that I could share with my family what a great cousin I had in Phillip. He will be sorely missed. Love you cousin!

I played baseball with Phil since we were 16 years old. I was at the game where he charged the mound! I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him these past two years and again play ball with him. He came to our wedding and brought his beautiful daughter.
Phil made the room brighter when he entered. His personality was larger than life. He was a genuine person. I will miss him dearly.

Ed and I reconnected briefly with Phil this Fall on the EWU campus. He called out to us, we visited, exchanged phone numbers and went on our way. He was so warm and friendly and sweet to us. It is a good memory. We understand all too well the loss of a child, sibling, parent of a young child. Sending our deep sympathy to his loved ones.

I was very sad to learn of Phil’s passing. He brought joyful energy and his radiant smile into every space he entered. I have many fun memories of time spent together including at high school dances.
I am sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences.

I really can’t believe this news, though I haven’t seen him or heard about him in years, he was someone who was unforgettable. He was a neighbor in my hood out in the country, we rode the same bus, he was a huge prankster and joker. Always the life of the party, my heart goes out to him and his family, especially his 6 year old daughter.

I had the blessing of being able to serve as a mission companion to Philip Nickel for 3 months during the summer of 1998. Philip was a powerful servant of the Lord and he gave everything everyday in his service. I pray for his daughter and family that you will be comforted in the peace of the gospel.

Phil, 19 years ago you introduced me to my wife at a dance out in Cheney. She has been my greatest treasure. Thank you. I remember crossing paths with you in the Missionary Training Center in 1997 as we were both preparing to go out and share the gospel. Didn't surprise me a bit to read that you were an absolutely outstanding missionary. I love the picture here--you're wearing that infectious smile that I remember you for. You will be missed by many. Thanks for touching our lives.
