I first met Lewis when we initiated Glacier National Park's (GNP) Bat Inventory and Monitoring Program in 2011. These were the first ever bat surveys in the park. He volunteered to help trap and process bats in the park on some nights when we were short staffed.
When I first met Lewis, he was so quiet, I hardly knew what to do around him. Throughout many adventures and years of working together, however, I quit talking as much, Lewis talked more, and we slowly got to know each other and our work partnership and friendship grew and grew. I came to think of Lewis as one as my closest colleagues and a dear, dear friend.
Lewis volunteered with us every year in GNP since 2011. He was instrumental in making GNP's bat program a success. His knowledge, passion, patience, and energy about bats made him such an incredible teacher to all the staff, volunteers, and visitors we encountered. Lewis was especially adept at setting water nets to catch bats and extracting the ones in the top panel. As I have always told folks, when Lewis was with us, we could plan on putting up twice as many nets and catching twice as many bats. And who will ever forget Lewis in his bat hat on Going Batty field trips! With Lewis’s help, we have now added four new bat species to GNP’s mammals list.
Here are some photos of Lewis volunteering with us in GNP on the bat program over the years.
Really miss you dear friend!

Dear Lynda, Will and Family,
Lewis brought Kirk and I to the Tobacco Valley of Montana for jobs in the Forest Service in Hydrology and Wildlife 30 years ago. This meant the world to us because it allowed us to have jobs in the same community and make this beautiful place our home. Without a doubt, Lewis was the best supervisor I had in my career, always supportive, kind and the best mentor. We shared a love of bird watching that started with the Christmas bird count 28 years ago. We also took 5th graders on bird walks for many years down along the Tobacco River Rails to Trails. His love for birding and all things wildlife was infectious and inspiring. In recent years, we have been sharing the organizing of the Christmas bird count. We have fond memories of having potlucks after the bird count in Lewis and Lynda's living room. We would bring our toddler son to the potluck and he would crawl around and enjoy the fact that he had so many laps to snuggle in with people sitting on the floor. Our birding group which we briefly had called Dancing Prairie Birders was a fun after hours endeavor. Oh how I will miss sharing bird sightings and our love for birding. Lewis was a true professional and conservationist. What he brought to the world in his quiet and kind way has made an impact that will not soon be forgotten.
I whole-heartedly echo Ellen's perspectives on Lewis as a supervisor, mentor and friend. His quiet and supportive manner was a trade-mark of a truly exceptional person. He exemplified everything positive you would wish to see in a supervisor. On numerous occasions he came to my defense while I dealt with difficult issues as District Hydrologist. Lewis will always hold a place in my memories of how a person can share their passion for wildlife in a quiet and reflective way. Thank you Lewis for taking me on my first hunt on the Kootenai. You will always be a guiding light.
Please accept our sincere condolences for the passing of your husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.

I had the privilege or meeting and working with Lewis late in our careers as he helped Nate Schwab and me in a bat research study in the Thompson and Little Bitterroot areas about 8 years ago. His expertise, willingness to work long, cold nights...and his positive attitude made the fieldwork joyful and productive. Condolences to the family for their loss and know that Lewis was a good man and well respected biologist.

Lewis was one of my first and favorite supervisors with the Forest Service. He taught me about wildlife and working for the Forest Service; however, and more importantly he was a great mentor and example of being patient and kind. He will forever be remembered by me as someone very special and he will be missed by many. Kirsten Kaiser (Libby, MT)

Saddened to learn of the passing of Lewis.
Fond memories of your family as neighbors in Dickinson, ND ca. 1980.
Our early life back then included league softball, building wooden fence together and socializing. Vivid memories of hunting sharp-tail grouse, pheasants, ducks and coyotes in the Badlands of North Dakota.
A remarkable person - accomplished in many areas.
What a treat to live next door to a wildlife biologist that was generous in sharing his breadth of knowledge.
May your family find Peace, Solace and Rest in these days.

Linda, Will & Family,
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Lewis in our world. We greatly admired his quiet way and his dedication to conservation. Some of my best bird-watching memories are with Lewis, Linda and even Will a couple of times on the Christmas Bird Count. I first met Lewis in the early 1990’s on a Sharp-tailed grouse project that he spearheaded to reintroduce sharpies to the Dancing Prairie. One spring, Lewis took Ed and me over to see my first Long-billed Curlew. Lewis has also provided great help with the loon platform on Tetrault. It was always fun to go to Lewis and Linda’s and see his awesome bat-house, learns some things and have one of Linda’s homemade rolls. He is greatly remembered as a good man and those memories stay with us, but we miss him.

I always admired Lewis for his patience and quiet, unassuming manner. There wasn't much that could rattle him at work.
I ran into him while I was bird hunting over on the CMR many years ago and ended up helping him to pack out a cow elk that he had gotten. The odds of meeting up had to be pretty slim. Fortunately for both of us it was a downhill pack.

I met Lewis playing volleyball in the middle school in 2010 after moving here to work for the Forest Service. My husband, Steve remembers that he was one of the few people who could pass the volleyball with his arms bent. He was a fun player, always in good spirits. I have many memories of him in the years since. Doing the winter eagle survey. The Christmas bird count. Banding bluebird chicks. My fondest memory is when he invited me and Steve one evening to watch the bats leaving his three bat houses, before mist netting them. This inspired us to install our own bat house. He was a wealth of knowledge, a paragon of serenity, and a good man. He will be sorely missed by us all.

Lewis was the paragon of patience. Examples include repeating bird identification he had taught us the last 5 years in a row. Good instructor, poor students. Also enjoyed my years on the slopes with him.
A particular memory was a mule deer hunt on the Boone and Crockett Ranch. We will miss him.

I have known and became a friend with Lewis since his first month starting work on the Eureka Ranger Station. I have spent many enjoyable hours fishing, hunting and completing projects with him. He was always willing to share his thoughts when he believed it would make our activity more rewarding. He had a passion to help others while infrequently asking others for help. And he always wanted to do the best he could. The only time he failed me on this point was when taking him to Lake Koocanusa to catch Rainbow Trout and Bull Trout. The only fish he caught were pikeminnows and suckers, but they were large. I offered him my lure but he wanted to show me you could catch them on his lure. His tenacity for doing good work really showed while restoring his vintage Ford Mustang. He took it all apart except the main frame. He cleaned, bagged, labeled, and took pictures of all the parts and then stored them in his garage until he had time to put the Mustang back together (a number of year later). I thought with such a long-time frame before he started to put the parts back together that he would have problems. But meticulously Lewis put it all back together without having left over parts (or he failed to tell me). He was so driven to make the Mustang look like it just came off the assembly line that he even buffed out windows if you could see any tiny scratch with a magnifier glass. With all his efforts the Mustang was a beauty when finished.

Lewis was my supervisor, mentor and friend for many years. He hired me as a wildlife biologist for the Rexford Ranger District on the Kootenai National Forest in 1991 - that's what brought me to Montana, a move I've never regrated. I have fond memories of working for and with him as advocates for the wildlife and their habitats in our area, and especially enjoyed the many hours of birdwatching I spent with both Lewis and Lynda. I will sorely miss him.

Q: What was Daniel really good at?
A: I remember a time Lewis and I were hunting together on Freezeout Lake with our sons, Will and Tim. Lewis and I had swan tags, so one day we were hunkered down behind a dike hoping to have a swan fly over us. We spent quite a bit of time there, but never fired a shot at anything. That was OK. There was plenty of bird activity on the body of water in front of us to keep us both entertained. I enjoy watching birds, but Lewis's enthusiasm for the birds is over the top.
